Secret Man Cave
2017
The idea of creating a hidden door had been on my mind for a long time. However coming to building was a big step. I was still living at my parents house, and was not expecting them to let me build a hidden door in one of the excisting doorways. However, when asking this question to my mom, there was no hesitation when she said yes.
Going to work on this project, I made a quick sketch of the closet and went of to the wood store. The wood store helped me cut up the wood and even gave tips for dimensions, templates and ease of building, which made the project go way smoother.
The construction was rather easy, since my sketch was cut out like an Ikea closet. This meant I could screw it together quite fast. The closet was fastened to the doorframe using some heavey barndoor hinges, and was further supported on the non-hinged side using some wheels. Opening the door for the first time revealed a perfect fit, and lifting it up slightly when closing put the closet perfectly on the doorstep, holding it in place.
Then came painting it. This was the longest part of the build. I asked our neighbour, who was a painter, and also painted parts of our house. This meant he had the right color paint to match with other excisting door in our house, blending in the closet nicely.
After painting, the closet was filled with stuff to make it look like a funcitonal closet. And we had an old camera and TV laying around, which where used to spy on people who were in front of the closet.
Looking back at the project, this was one of the biggest project I had done up untill then. And the quality, using the help of my neighbour, was astonishing. When people came over to the house, they were confused, and asked if a room had disappeared. Rating the believability of the closet as very well. The closet even made it to a national short video website called Dumpert, where I send in a video. The hidden door gathered over 140.000 views and the overall reactions were funny and positive.
